Discovered Attack and Discovered Check

A discovery is a dangerous trick that you can use to surprise your opponent and win the game. It happens when a player moves one piece out of the way to reveal a previously blocked attack by another piece.

There are two types - Discovered Check and Discovered Attack

.

Discovered Attack

.

A discovered attack happens when you move a piece away to reveal a previously blocked attacked by another piece, The piece you moved can also attack another piece which can result in a double attack too

.

Let us see an example to understand this better.

Here, the white knight can go to b6 to reveal the attack by white bishop on c4 to the black queen on f7. As the bishop attacks the queen, even the knight on b6 attacks the black rook on a8 resulting in a double attack

.

Discovered Check

.

When you move a piece or when the piece that is revealed gives a check, it is called discovered check.

.

Let us see an example to understand this better

Here, white can play knight to f5 revealing the white rook on e1 checking the black king on e8. As the white rook gives check to the black king, even the white knight attacks the black queen. After the black king moves, white can capture the black queen on d6.

Here, the white knight can go to e6 revealing the e3 bishop attacking the black queen, After the black queen captures the e3 bishop, white can play knight to d5 attacking the queen on e3 and threatening a dangerous fork on c7.

1. Rd8 Qe5 Re8#

   If black plays Rd8, Qc7 will lose the queen.

   If black plays Qd8, Qg7#.

   If black plays Qe7, Re8 Qe8, Rg7#
