Hey

Welcome back to Chess With Ramkar—your chess newsletter for tactical workouts, practical insights, and sharp ideas to level up your chess game.

We will learn about a concept called “Overloaded Pieces.”

.

📘 Lesson of the day: [Overloaded Pieces]

Today’s theme is about overloaded pieces in chess.

💡 Key Insights:

  • In overloaded pieces, a piece will be performing too many defensive tasks; this could be a piece that’s defending other pieces or against threats.

Let us see an example to understand this

.

White to play and win

Here, the black queen on c7 is overloaded, as it is supporting two black pieces (the rook on d8 and the rook on c6).

Now, White can distract the Black queen by playing rook to d8. After this, the black queen has to move from c7 to capture the rook back. Now, the rook on c6 is not protected by the queen. So, white can capture the rook for free

Rd8 Qd8 Qc6: White wins the rook for free.

.

Now, we can solve three more puzzles on overloaded pieces to understand this concept even further.
