X-Ray Attack

X-ray attack happens when a piece attacks or defends a square through an enemy piece. X-ray attack can create an unexpected threat and surprises to your opponents.

Let us see an example to understand this wonderful tactic.

Here, the white bishop on b2 is supporting on the h8 square through the enemy queen on f6, So, white can play rook to h8 to which black would reply with queen to h8 and white can checkmate by capturing the queen on h8 with the h1 rook.

Rh8 Qh8 Rh8# or

Rh8 Kg7 R1h7#

Here when the white queen goes to g8, it gets support from the h7 pawn directly, and gets the support from white rook on g1 indirectly (X-Ray = Supporting through enemy rook).

Here by playing bishop to e4, white supports its queen on b7 through enemy piece (Queen on c6).
